The Golden Scholar

She also turned 13 recently! What a fun party that was!

Yesterday was a big day for Hannah. After a very long school year, Hannah reaped the rewards of sticking to it and working hard, despite her health difficulties.

Hannah was awarded the prestigious Golden Scholar Award given to those students who maintain a 3.8 GPA or higher. Her GPA was on the higher side (.2 higher, to be exact). Not that I am bragging! Well, maybe a little.

In addition to this award she was also awarded "English Student of the Year" for all grades 7th – 12th . She was also awarded her legion's award which goes to one student from each legion.

I am so proud of her and for her tenacity to get things done, despite ANY obstacle!

You may notice that her feeding tube is out for the pictures. Yeah! It has been out since Monday and she is able to eat a little. She is happy and hopeful. She is by no means out of the woods, but we are encouraged greatly!

And on top of all that, SHE is BEAUTIFUL! Inside and Out!

The Evils of Smoking

Joshua entered his school's creative writing contest. He entered in the Persuasive Essay category. We were so excited for him when he won for his class. Tonight he was awarded first place for Persuasive Essays in all of the 4th Grade.

Way to Go Josh! Congratulations!

The Evils of Smoking

I believe people should not smoke for many different reasons. When I am around people that are smoking, my stomach hurts and my nose itches. I also plug my nose. I really dislike it when people smoke. I am going to list four reasons that smoking is bad.

The first reason smoking is bad for people is that smoking can cause many different types of cancers: kidney cancer, lung cancer, stomach cancer, mouth cancer, throat cancer, nose cancer, larynx cancer, esophageal cancer, pancreatic cancer, bladder cancer, and leukemia. Over 400,000 people die in the United States every year because of diseases caused by smoking. If a person thinks about that, over the past ten years about 4 million people have died because of smoking.

Secondly, smoking is also bad for the environment. When people breathe out the smoke, it pollutes the air. Sometimes people are careless and throw cigarettes and cigars out the window of a car into a forest or a road. I once saw a movie called Pippi Longstocking. In the movie, a random guy burned down a children's home because he was careless with a cigarette.

Third, smoking causes health problems for smokers. For one of my sister's birthdays, she went to a body museum and saw a person's lungs that had smoked. They were charcoal black. In my research, I learned that consistent smokers get sick more often and sometimes die ten years earlier than nonsmokers. Smoking can also cause cataracts which make people not be able to see clearly and can even make them go blind. Also, arteries become blocked and can cause gangrene. Smoking can lead to hearing loss too.

The fourth reason smoking is bad is that even second-hand smoke is harmful. Second-hand smoke is toxic and especially dangerous to children. Second-hand smoke is smoke that is inhaled by someone nearby a person who is smoking. This person may be a child. By age five, a child living with a smoker has consumed the equivalent smoke of 102 packs of cigarettes. This can cause many problems for the child including, difficulty breathing, more ear infections, more pneumonia and bronchitis, coughing and asthma and even SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome).

Beware of the evils of smoking. I have listed several evils of smoking that can be harmful to you and to those you love. I hope someday people will realize all of the evils of smoking and stop. Be smart, save yourself, and don't start. For free help on how to stop smoking you can contact www.ashline.org/help.

cRAzY wEEk! Oompa Loompa Style

It has been "crazy" week around here. Becca's school has been having a "crazy" week. There was CrAzy HaIR daY, for which she donned a green wig! Crazy "Polo Shirt" day which is a very big deal if you go to a school that requires uniforms in NOT your favorite colors. This was a favorite day among students because you didn't have to tuck in your shirt...or where a belt! There was also crazy fEEt day. This was also a treat because your shoes did not have to be 100 percent white or black. It has been very amusing to me that something so very "normal" at any other junior high or high schools could be so inspiring and cRaZY when you go to a uniform school. They even have fundraisers at the school where they sell regular T-shirts and if the kids buy them, then on test days they can wear them. These are very popular fundraisers.
The week was capped off with Armageddon!

The school is divided into legions and the different legions compete to see who is the best legion. Becca's legion took first place out of fourteen! Of course this required her to compete in the "five minutes of pain" category for which she and her good friends dressed as an OOMPA LOOMPA (from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) and sang for the judge...the most painful performance won. There were other categories as well....like volleyball, dodge ball, extreme trivia, and an eating contest that curled my stomach when it was explained to me. I think the OOMPA LOOMPA painful performance may have tipped the scales in favor of Becca's legion! Hence the first place. Becca originally signed up to be in the eating contest, but then thought better of it since she would have no control over the number of carbs she would have to consume in a five minute limit. Thankfully she made this wise choice because after what I heard about what was consumed I believe she would still be in the hospital had she competed.

How Much Pop in a Kilowatt?

Popcorn Anyone????

I know many of you are waiting with baited breath to see Becca's science fair project. She turned it in on Friday and Monday when I picked her up from school I was able to go and see all the projects.

I found her project in the cafeteria, before I found her and was delighted to see that she had won a blue ribbon. She won first place in Physics out of all the 7th and 8th graders. Everything at her school was divided into categories such as physics, chemistry etc. Each category has a first, second and third place winner who will be able to go on to the ASU science fair. She is very excited.
For her project she tested microwave oven wattage. She selected four microwave ovens with varying watts, two we owned and one from each of our next door neighbors. She then popped microwave popcorn from the same case of popcorn (thanks Tonya and Brent for the fabulous Christmas present) for exactly two minutes. She popped three bags in each of the four microwaves. After two minutes she opened the bags and counted the remaining unpopped kernels. Her predictions were correct and the microwave with the highest wattage cooked the most kernels.
Her entire project was to be done anonymously and her name was only on the back. Thankfully it occurred to us, at 10 p.m. the night before it was due, to remove the photos on her project and replace them with Becca cropped out!

Congrats on First Place!

Go Becca!

Are You Munching Metal?

Hannah's science fair project was centered around the iron that is in breakfast cereal. She picked three breakfast cereals that had varying degrees of recommend daily iron content. She soaked several cups of the cereal in big bowls for 45 minutes, stirred vigorously and then inserted a very powerful magnet that extracted all the iron that the soggy cereal released. It was a fun project. As a grade, she got 100 percent. In her class, nine kids got 100 percent. Four of them were selected to go to the school science fair (for 4th, 5th and 6th graders). Hannah's was selected. She won a blue ribbon among all the other top contenders. She would have preferred to be in the top 10 as she is ultra competitive and likes to win! After a few tears she was quite delighted with her blue ribbon and very motivated to be in the top 10 next year. (She was in the top 10 last year with her "Must it Rust?" science project.) I think she did a fabulous job! And we are all very proud of her!
Stay tuned for the next installment of science fair projects, entitled....
"How much POP is in a kilowatt?"
(Becca's project is due tomorrow!)
